GHS - Globally Harmonized System

GHS - What does GHS ?

GHS stands for: Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals and is an important part of the future chemicals legislation. The transition to this new classification and labelling standard is a high demand on companies.

In the future, all chemicals will be classified worldwide by the same criteria and labelled with the same symbols. Whether in China, the United States or Europe - everyone recognizes the symbol, for example, if something is toxic, corrosive, explosive, flammable or a hazard for water.

Substances should be classified, labelled and packed until 1. December 2010 according to the substance directive (67/548/EWG) and mixtures should be classified, labelled and packed until 1. June 2015 according to the preparation directive (1999/45/EG). Manufacturers and importers have the possibility to use the new classifications and labels according to GHS but even before those dates. In the interim period between 1. December 2010 and 1. June 2015 substances have to be classified and labelled according to the substance directive (67/548/EWG) as well as according the GHS-regulation.
